About Shane Donnelly Photo

Shane

I am a photographer based in Sydney. I was born in this city, but my family and I left soon after. We travelled extensively within Australia during my childhood. Finally we fetched up in Perth, Western Australia, where I finished high school and then attended and graduated university.

I returned to Sydney as an adult and have lived here now for more than 30 years, most of my life.

Recently completed travels include, in chronological order, a cycling trip from Sydney to the west along the Lachlan River Valley to Hillston and return; a camping trip along the Murray River from the Snowy Mountains to sea; the cities, temples and volcanoes on Java in Indonesia; a city tour of Singapore and a return road trip with the motorcyclists of the Black Dog Ride from Sydney to central Australia.

My at-home subject is mother Sydney.

I use a Nikon D300. I have a standard 50mm lens but I usually use my AF-S DX Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II zoom. It's compact, versatile and easy to travel with. If I can, I prefer to get as close as possible to subjects using the wide-angle end. When wishes are fishes, my next purchase will be something at least as wide but a bit faster, maybe I'll sacrifice some of the telephoto. I have two SB600 Speedlights with two stands(any additional lights I buy will be SB900s - for the extra power). I also have a Velbon tripod. The two most useful photography books I've read recently are (1) Joe McNally, The Hot Shoe Diaries. Absolutely chock-full of suggestions on how to use speedlights. (2) Richard l'Anson, Lonely Planet's Guide to Travel Photography Lots of practical details and information from someone who's done it.
